Alan Cotton is one of Britain’s most distinguished landscape painters. His oil painting impasto technique and his understanding of the medium, are immediately recognisable and his work is much sought after worldwide.
In 2005, he was invited by HRH, Prince of Wales, to accompany him as Tour Artist to Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand and in 2011 he travelled twice to Everest with the explorer, Sir David Hempleman-Adams.
In 2009, he was nominated as an icon by the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Committee. He was awarded an Honorary D.Litt in 2006 by the University of Exeter for his outstanding contribution to the arts and was later appointed Hon. Professor of Arts at the University of Bath.
In 2008, he was nominated as an ‘Icon’ by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Committee and over two nights at Windsor Castle, he and many celebrities, raised £750,000 for the D of E Awards Scheme.
In 2021 he was awarded the MBE for Services to the Arts in the South by HM the Queen. His work is held in important art collections in Europe and the USA, including the British Royal Collection.
Cotton was brought up in Redditch, and studied at Ruskin Hall, Bournville School of Art, Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham University and at the University of Exeter. Through the Arts he has raised many thousands of pounds for a wide range of charities, particularly Children’s Hospice South West, where he is Patron of ‘Art for Life’.
